The “War and Us” painting was made by Edward Okuń. On the back of the painting there is an inscription: “I started this painting in 1917 / I finished it in 1923”. The author takes the theme of war and turns it into a fairy-tale in a symbolic way, as he walks together with his wife. Next to them, there is an old woman who is depicted as a witch – the personification of war and hunger. At first glance, the colorful background of the painting is pleasing to the eye, but when looking at the details, it shows horror. Snakes symbolize evil and Satan, while aggressive moths allude to death. In the end, war is only beautiful in appearance when in fact, it deeply carries notions of destruction, hunger, death and terror. The spouses protect flowers that are the symbol of fragile human life – beautiful but ephemeral.
