The author takes the theme of war and turns it into a fairy-tale in a symbolic way, as he walks together with his wife. Next to them, there is an old woman who is depicted as a witch \u2013 the personification of war and hunger. At first glance, the colorful background of the painting is pleasing to the eye, but when looking at the details, it shows horror. Snakes symbolize evil and Satan, while aggressive moths allude to death. In the end, war is only beautiful in appearance when in fact, it deeply carries notions of destruction, hunger, death and terror.
