The notebook presents the painting “Vicious Circle” made by Jacek Malczewski. It belongs to the collection of the National Museum in Poznań.
Polish painter from Radom. He lived in the years 1854-1929. The main representative of symbolism at the turn of the century (XIX/XX). He created sketches, drawings and paintings (about 2000 pieces). Of which about 1,200 have survived today. A significant collection of his works is in the Art Gallery in Lviv.
“Vicious Circle” is one of the most important paintings in his oeuvre. This is the so-called work-manifesto. It combines folk, patriotic and mythological themes. The boy sitting on the ladder has a metaphorical meaning. The ladder divides the composition into two parts: the left side (mythological and folk characters), the right side (dramatic and patriotic). According to Malczewski’s memoirs, it was Vicious Circle and Melancholia that inspired Stanisław Wyspiański to write “The Wedding”.
